<h1>Tropical Storm Erin</h1>In the latest National Hurricane Center update, Tropical Storm Erin is moving westward across the Atlantic and is expected to strengthen to a major hurricane by this weekend. Over the next 48 hours, Erin is expected to get better organized as it moves away from drier air and into warmer waters. The storm is still moving west of the Cabo Verde Islands, and is projected to come close to the Leeward Islands eventually. Right now, the cone of uncertainty has Erin increasing to a Category 3 hurricane by this weekend.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/1-1755142261404.png"><h1>Forecast Factors</h1>Erin is forecasted to track westward, then take a slight curve back to the east. The ridge of high pressure over the Atlantic will be a big influence on Erin's path forward.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 161751-1755123475367.png">Models keep the center of circulation strong on this system despite the dry air, though it may be more of a struggle than the model below depicts (GFS). The dry air should thin some during the mid-week time frame as the wave moves toward the Caribbean.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/0813-1755123575267.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h3>Is this coming to the United States?</h3>Still too soon to know - what it looks like after formation will be telling, along with the couple of steering features towards the end of the week. Still a good chance that this doesn't affect any land masses directly, but not a guarantee. This would be a good week to fill any holes in your hurricane prep plan. We've got a lot of season ahead of us, so don't let your guard down!<h1>Atlantic Area of Interest</h1>There is another area we are monitoring that is expected to move across the Yucatan and into the Gulf. This area has a low chance of tropical development in the next week ahead. Dexter more than doubled this stat, but it's still less than 30% of a typical year, even though we may be ahead of schedule when it comes to named storms. Erin Forecast to Become a Hurricane

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

Waves of energy will continuing diving east off the Rockies into into the Plains and Midwest. Wednesday evening, a line of storms continued to push eastward across Nebraska and South Dakota producing several wind reports over 70-80 mph!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 162256-1755123781531.png">A Slight threat for severe weather remains in effect through tonight for portions of the Northern Plains, including South Dakota. All threats are possible with these storms, even isolated tornadoes.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PLAINS SVR TONIGHT-1755132119326.jpg">By Thursday, another Slight risk has been added for the Northern Plains. Strong winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes will be possible.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 162449-1755123893911.png">There is a risk for significant hailstones as well. This means hail 2" in diameter or larger will be possible along parts of I-29 and I-94.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 162506-1755123964290.png">Storms should weaken throughout the night into Thursday morning. The long-range temperature trend towards the end of August shows higher confidence that temperatures will remain above average. Even this week, temperatures are feeling the summertime heat. But, there's a sharp cold front moving through with a 20 degree temperature drop for parts of the Pacific Northwest.<h1>Relief!</h1>A sharp cold front delivered cooler air to the PNW on Wednesday. That will drop temperatures substantially from the low 90's in Seattle on Tuesday to the 70's. Another reinforcing shot of cooler air moves in this weekend, but that one has some rain chances with it. I think we'll take it give how the first part of the week was shaping up.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 164022-1755124826854.png">Although this front in the Northwest won't bring rain to the region, there will be rain in the forecast later in the week with another incoming system.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/08132-1755125133242.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>In the Southwest, we had a few record highs on Wednesday. A small cooldown is anticipated for the rest of the week. Coast to Coast Heat With Some Relief & Storms

We've got multiple wildfires burning across the West including three large ones: Lee wildfire, Dragon Bravo wildfire, and Gifford wildfire. It's a hot, dry, and windy forecast.<h1>GIFFORD FIRE</h1>Burning as California's largest wildfire in 2025, the Gifford Fire has torched over 129k acres. The good news has been the containment numbers in recent days. The Lee Fire has only been burning for a little over a week, but has burned almost as many acres as the Gifford Fire, over 123k acres. Most of the poor air quality has been locked up around Grand Junction, fluctuating at times.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 161023-1755123031361.png"><h1>DRAGON BRAVO FIRE</h1>One of the largest fires in Arizona history, the Dragon Bravo Fire, has continued to smolder along the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon. It has burned more than 144k acres, making it the 7th largest in state history.<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1953931727044223408" src="https://x.com/WeatherNation/status/1953931727044223408"></div>Another fire that has cropped up in the last few days was the Billy Fire which is burning northeast of Phoenix. That is burning in Tonto National Forest after being ignited by lightning on August 11.<h1><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-13 161300-1755123188513.png"></h1><h1>FORECAST</h1>Red Flag Warnings remain in effect through Thursday for some areas. Rob grew up in South Florida, where daily afternoon storms and hurricanes piqued his interest in meteorology early on. That interest was fostered by his teachers and his father, who one time brought him onto the roof of their home to watch a funnel cloud move through the Everglades several miles away. Years of filmmaking and tv production in high school gradually pushed him toward broadcast meteorology at Florida State University, where he joined and eventually led the student run daily weather show. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, he began his career at KESQ in Palm Springs, California before heading to KFSN in Fresno and WLOS in Asheville, North Carolina. He has covered a diverse array of extreme weather events, including haboobs and flash flooding in the desert, extreme snow in the Sierra, hurricanes, and Appalachian ice storms. He also enjoys telling stories and reporting about weather issues.

Get a blanket and find some dark skies! One of the most prolific meteor showers of the year will peak during the upcoming week.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSEID-1754872084317.jpg">The Perseid Meteor Shower typically reaches a peak during the second week of August as the Earth moves through the debris field left by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which makes a trip through the solar system once every 133 years, last visiting the inner-solar system in 1992. Debris left by the comet dives through the Earth's atmosphere to create the beautiful meteor shower we expect. 2025 isn't expected to be the best year to see the meteors, unfortunately, as the waning gibbous moon will rise in the evening, washing out any faint meteors that may have been seen under a new moon. Ideal conditions can produce 50-100 meteors per hour, but with the brightness from the moon, expect 20-50 under dark skies away from city lights.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-10 052401-1754829026071.png"><h2>A Pair of Planets</h2>Another fun astronomical event will be gracing the morning skies through much of this week - the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter!<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/TOMER PERSIED 2-1754872142561.jpg">These planets will appear to be right next to each other in the morning sky, even through they're still millions of miles apart! Flash flooding continues to hit the Southeast hard - especially Florida. A trough of low pressure is still spinning in parts of the southeast, keeping the rain chances nearby. A stationary storm sat and rained over the same spot, on Sanibel Island, for much of Sunday morning (8/10). That efficient tropical rain added up to over a foot of rain by the time the weekend was done. Florida is normally a tad more resilient to fresh water flooding, but nowhere can handle that much rain. Strong Storms Across the Plains Monday night

As of 11 AM HST, Calvin is now a Post-Tropical Cyclone. Visible satellite has shown that the low-level center of Calvin is broadening and becoming ill-defined so the National Hurricane will stop advisories on it. Additional information on this can be found in the<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="weather.gov/hfo/HSFNP"> High Seas Forecast.</a><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2023/07/post tropical-1689802441451.jpg">Calvin will continue to move to the west in the next 24 hours, departing in the Hawaiian islands later tonight with very few lingering impacts. Once the storm is west of Hawaii, it will weaken further over open waters.
